This is a list of the top 5 games that are truly memorable from my childhood, I have fond memories of enjoying and or getting angry at all of these games.
5) Mario (Specifically Super Mario Bros 2) – Nintendo Entertainment System
Out of all of the Mario games throughout the years this game had a truly unique and fun format. The game felt much more open and adventurous than the previous games. It feature tons of secret areas and hidden things that could be found. It also featured the option to play as different characters.
I spent countless hours playing through the levels on this game, facing bosses, and getting frustrated about that fact that you could not back track (don’t accidentally run past anything, because it will be gone forever).
4) Final Fantasy VII – PlayStation 1
This game will forever hold a special place in my heart, it’s the first RPG I ever actually sat down and got into. It featured one of the most unique spell/ability systems out of any RPG I have played (Praise the all materia).
Final Fantasy VII was way ahead of its time, and I have a hard time enjoying any RPG as much as this one.
Sadly though, I never actually beat the game (maybe I should go replay it). I watched my cousin beat the game, but I never personally got all the way to the end of the game.
3) Sonic the Hedgehog – Sega Genesis
Can you say “SEGAAAAAAAAAA!”
This game is the epitome of my childhood, we owned a Sega and not a NES for much of my childhood.
Unlike FFVII I have beat Sonic many times.
Aside from Sonic 1, 2 and 3, Sonic Adventure would be my favorite Sonic game (who doesn’t love raising Chao). The newer Sonic games are entertaining, but they are far from the original.
2) Golden Eye – Nintendo 64
The game that truly changed the face of shooters and competitive game play on consoles.
In retrospect this game is actually horrible, but at the time it was innovative, fresh, and competitive.
I can remember playing split screen for hours with my friends (stop screen looking!).
Needless to say this game did not age very well.
1) Diablo – PC and PlayStation 1
My favorite game series of all time.
I have easily put hundreds of hours in each of the Diablo games, and I still play Diablo 2 and 3 regularly.
I actually played through Diablo 1 on PlayStation with my dad, later I learned about Diablo 2 and there went every free second I had.
The Diablo games are memorable, addicting, and truly amazing.
